HORTUS SEMIOTICUS 13 / 2026

This special issue, “Semiotics and Translation”, is a product of continued collaboration between the Department of Semiotics and the Department of Translation Studies at the University of Tartu, following a number of productive and informative events, starting with the round table discussion “Intersemiotic Translation: An Invitation to Connect Translation Studies and Semiotics” in 2023.

This special issue, one more instance in a long and fruitful discussion on semiotics and translation, encompasses four excellent articles, covering topics from cartoon representation and imagological analysis (Ana Muñoz Macias Macias), theoretical contemplations regarding transmediality and intersemiotic translation (Betül Çanakpınar and Hazel Tansuyu), a case application of intersemiotic translation and transmedia studies of George Seferis’s work’s adaptation to podcasts (Spyridon Karpouzis), and the application of zoo/ecosemiotics and the semiotics of hybridity to the works of Yevgenia Belorusets (Mariia Korniietska).

This special issue also includes two interviews, the first being conducted by Katre Pärn, with Peeter Torop as the interviewee. The interview examines the concept of total translation, as well as other important aspects of Torop’s work. The second interview, a discussion between Elea Pertusati, Gabriel Matthew Bergman, Korbus Marais, and Kalevi Kull, covers a broad section of semiotic studies, but one highlight noted is the segment of the talk concerned with translation as a fundamental semiotic phenomenon in connection with semiosis; it is considered an aspect of existence rather than a bounded process or object.

Lastly, two book reviews are included in this number, the first being concerned with Translation, Semiotics, and Feminism: Selected Writings of Barbara Godard (edited by Eva C. Karpinski and Elena Basile, 2023), reviewed by Sebastián Nabón Hernández. Nabón Hernández presents the edited volume as noting Barbara Godard’s importance to feminism, translation studies, and semiotics, while also presenting it as a restoration of her work. The final text to be published is Birgit Ületoa’s review of Translation and Objects: Rewriting Migrancy and Displacement through the Materiality of Art (Carmen África Vidal Claramonte, 2024). Ületoa highlights, among other things, how Vidal connects personal experiences with larger narratives.

Erinumber “Semiootika ja tõlge” on Tartu Ülikooli semiootika osakonna ja tõlkeuuringute osakonna jätkuva koostöö tulemus, mis järgneb mitmele produktiivsele ja informatiivsele üritusele, alates 2023. aastal toimunud ümarlauaarutelust “Intersemiootiline tõlge: kutse ühendada tõlkeuuringud ja semiootika”.

See erinumber – järjekordne näide pikast ja viljakast arutelust semiootika ja tõlke üle – koondab neja suurepärast artiklit, mis käsitlevad teemasid alates karikatuurist ja imagoloogilisest analüüsist (Ana Muñoz Macias Macias), teoreetilistest mõtisklustest transmediaalsuse ja intersemiootilise tõlke üle (Betül Çanakpınar ja Hazel Tansuyu) ning intersemiootilise tõlke ja transmeediauuringute juhtumianalüüsist George Seferise loomingu taskuhäälinguks kohandamise näitel (Spyridon Karpouzis), kuni zoo- ja ökosemiootika ning hübriidsuse semiootika rakendamiseni Jevgenia Belorusetsi teoste analüüsimisel (Mariia Korniietska).

Erinumber sisaldab ka kahte intervjuud. Esimese viis läbi Katre Pärn, kelle vestluskaaslaseks on Peeter Torop. Nende vestluses käsitletakse totaaltõlke mõistet, samuti teisi Toropi loomingu olulisi tahke. Teine intervjuu – Elea Pertusati, Gabriel Matthew Bergmani, Kobus Marais‘ ja Kalevi Kulli vaheline arutelu – hõlmab laia osa semiootilistest uuringutest, kuid eraldi väärib esiletõstmist vestluse lõik, mis käsitleb tõlget kui fundamentaalset, semioosiga seotud semiootilist nähtust: seda mõistetakse pigem olemasolu ühe tahuna kui piiritletud protsessi või objektina.

Lõpetuseks sisaldab number kahte raamatuarvustust. Esimese, mille on kirjutanud Sebastián Nabón Hernández, keskmes on teos “Translation, Semiotics, and Feminism: Selected Writings of Barbara Godard” (toimetanud Eva C. Karpinski ja Elena Basile, 2023). Nabón Hernández tutvustab koguteost, mis rõhutab Barbara Godardi tähtsust feminismi, tõlkeuuringute ja semiootika jaoks, esitledes seda ühtlasi Godardi loomingu taasesiletoomisena. Viimane avaldatud tekst on Birgit Ületoa arvustus teosele “Translation and Objects: Rewriting Migrancy and Displacement through the Materiality of Art” (Carmen África Vidal Claramonte, 2024). Ületoa toob muu hulgas esile, kuidas Vidal seob isiklikke kogemusi laiemate narratiividega.
