The call for papers (CFP) for the conference, “Sui generis or/and Entangled?: Rethinking the Relationship between Culture and Ecology”, has been released. Organised by translation scholar Reine Meylaerts and translation scholar and semiotician Kobus Marais, the conference will take place 2-4 June 2027, in Leuven, Belgium, in association with KU Leuven. Abstracts of 250-400 words are due before the 15th of September, 2026. All abstracts should be sent to Marais at jmarais@ufs.ac.za.
The conference attempts to explore the relationship between cultural, social, ecological, and physical elements of the world, specifically considering the constraints and influences they have on each other. This conference is an attempt to better understand more how these often differentiated areas of study are in tandem, while also looking for new ways to study, critique, and re-interpret their relations to each other.
Semiotics is of major importance to this conference’s goal, especially as bio-, eco-, and zoosemioticians often explore the above in their own work. Moreover, the conference’s interdisciplinary nature makes it a prime place for semioticians to explore new fields and perspectives, developing their views further.
This is also a fantastic opportunity for students to attend many interesting talks, while also, if you feel up to it, present your own work and receive valuable feedback from experienced semioticians and other scholars from around the world.
